3D Graphics Fused With Reality - On The Fly 05.03.2010
New software developed at Oxford University makes it possible to fuse real and computer-generated
visuals on the fly.
The so called Parallell Tracking and Mapping(PTAM) software is basically a camera tracking system
which maps the environment as seen through the camera and renders the real world surfaces into
platforms for virtual objects or characters without the need for pre-stored maps or tags.
The best part about this is the fact that the software is light enough to be ran on many
smartphones, including the iPhone. The system has currently been licensed to QderoPateo LLC, which
is an augmented reality company.
Blending real and computer generated 3D graphics isn't really an innovation in itself, as it
has been done in movies for years, however, the groundbreaking idea here is that it is done
on-the-fly, when the graphics in movies requires extensive processing of the recorded images.
The developed company, Isis Innovation, who licensed it's system to QderoPateo, is currently
looking for commercial partners to develop the software for a variety of other usefull
applications.
This is just bound to be awesome!
