Google And Other Internet Sites Makes Us Smarter 23.02.2010
That is at least the verdict of the 895 experts surveyed by Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project and the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University.
According to study co-auther, Janna Anderson, "Three out of four experts said our use of the internet enhances and augments
human intelligence, and two thirds said usse of the internet has improved reading, writing and rendering of knowledge".
The survey itself is a response to Nicholas Carr's cover story "Is Google Making Us Stupid", in Atlantic Monthly, summmer 2008.
One of the best responses in the Pew survey is from Craigslist founder Craig Newmark, stating
"People are already using Google as an adjunct to their own memory. For example, I have a hunch about something, need facts to support, and Google comes through for me. Sometimes, I see I'm wrong, and I appreciate finding that out before I open my mouth."
Smart fella, that one.
Myself, I think the internet helps boost intelligence and knowledge aquisition in some cases, but it may also corrput and
degenerate young minds.
